Key Supplements for Insulin Resistance and Healthy Metabolism

One of the most frustrating things that women experience in perimenopause and menopause is weight resistance.

You look at yourself in the mirror, see an extra ring around your belly, and commit to eating better and exercising more so you can get rid of it.

But nothing happens…

Despite doing everything “right,” even the things that you’ve done in the past and had success, the weight sticks.

So what do you do?

Our culture tells us that it’s normal to gain weight during perimenopause and menopause…so do we give in, buy some elastic-waist pants, and assume this is just how it’s going to be?

OR do we say “no more” to these demeaning lies…

Because here’s the truth: you CAN live a vibrant, energized life in a body that is trim and healthy at any age.

There are real root cause drivers of a sluggish metabolism that are happening in your body — and chances are, they are affecting more than just your weight.

Why You May Be Struggling to Lose Weight

The goal of healthy metabolism is to take the food you eat and convert it to the energy that fuels your body. But unfortunately, this pattern gets disrupted during perimenopause and menopause. Due to chronic stress, a high-carb diet, and insulin deregulation, your body starts to hold onto these nutrients as fat instead of putting them to use.

Metabolic syndrome is the #1 root cause behind diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, and more chronic health conditions as you get older. And research shows that up to 50% of women will deal with metabolic disruption or insulin resistance, especially after age 50. (1)

This. is. HUGE. Yet for some reason, our conventional doctors still aren’t talking about this.

Metabolic dysfunction, insulin resistance, and struggling to lose weight all go hand-in-hand, but it goes deeper than that, too.

These things are connected with chronic, ongoing inflammation raging through your body. A key benchmark in metabolic syndromes and insulin resistance is that your body struggles to get the nutrition you need through food alone.

Instead of getting energy and nutrition from the foods you’re eating, your body has decided to store it as fat and stick it on your midsection. And since it is hormones governing where the weight goes, you can’t just “diet” that bulge away!

You need to get back to the root to reverse insulin resistance and restart your metabolism in order to get relief from your symptoms.

Why Use Supplements for Insulin Resistance?

Supplying your body with key nutrients, healing your gut, and removing inflammation are all key aspects of reversing insulin resistance and getting your metabolism back on track.

And once these systems are working properly, your hormones work better, your energy stays up, you sleep better at night, your mind stays sharp all day, and your body’s systems are protected long-term.

Here Are My Top Supplements for Restoring Insulin Sensitivity and Revving Your Metabolism Naturally:

1 — Magnesium

At the top of almost all of my supplement recommendations for women, magnesium is a critical tool if you’re dealing with widespread inflammation, insulin resistance, or sluggish metabolism.

Women in perimenopause and menopause are pretty much guaranteed to be low in magnesium (because your body is burning through it, and often it’s harder to absorb through your diet because of other underlying issues).

Upping your magnesium reduces bloating and water retention so you can immediately feel slimmer and really see what you’re dealing with and what was just excess bloat from inflammation.

Research shows that it also improves insulin sensitivity, lowers blood sugar, and helps restore a healthy metabolism. (2) Without magnesium, the chemical process of producing energy from the food you eat can’t happen!

Not all magnesium supplements are effective, which is why I recommend Essentially Whole® Magnesium Restore. It is tested and proven to be highly absorbable and easy for your body to use (and it won’t cause some of the gut issues other forms are known for). Get it here today!

2 — Chromium

Chromium is an essential nutrient to help insulin work effectively. Studies have found that chromium supplements reduce your risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease because of how well they can improve the function of insulin in your body. (3)

While chromium does occur naturally in some foods, it does not absorb well from diet alone. Supplementing is the best way to go to leverage its benefits for your body!

3 — Taurine

Research is showing that taurine supplements improve insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar, and enable your body to metabolize sugars more effectively so it gets used for energy instead of being stored as excess fat. (4)

4 — Vitamin C

Vitamin C works well to enhance the effects of other supplements to reduce inflammation, improve cellular function, and stabilize long-term blood sugar levels. (5)

Vitamin C works to clear out the junk that is building up in your cells, causing them to be stressed and resistant to insulin in the first place! (You can see my favorite vitamin C powder here.)

5 — B Vitamins

All B vitamins play a critical role in metabolism, converting food to energy, and making sure your blood sugar stays in balance. (6) Folate and B12 are critical players in insulin function, but they cannot work without the other B vitamins.

Adding some activated or methylated B vitamins to your daily regimen can help make sure your body is taking the food you eat and using it for energy instead of storing it as fat!

NOTE: It’s critical that you choose a supplement that contains all the B vitamins in proper proportions and that it is activated (or methylated). Many women struggle with the methylation process, which means the supplement is worthless to your body—and can actually cause more problems. All of my supplements that contain B vitamins (including Activated B Complete) use the effective, activated form that your body needs!

6 — Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a powerful tool to reduce inflammation in your body, and research shows that it helps maintain stable insulin levels and supports your liver, as well. (7)

    Hi Dr. Mariza,
I am in Canada, and cannot purchase your supplements. Is there any brand you can recommend that is similar, or comes close, to your blend that would be available worldwide? It’s so hard to know which formulations have the most benefits, and most multi-supplements don’t actually contain enough of their vitamins and minerals to be helpful.

    • Mariza August 1, 2021 at 6:09 pm #

Thanks for reaching out about this! Due to the many challenges of shipping internationally, we are only able to ship to addresses in the United States.

If you have a friend or relative in the US, you could consider shipping the item to their address and having them send the package on to you.

Additionally, you could use shipping service such as Shipito or MyUS. Please note that, if you work with one of these shipping companies, you are responsible to make all arrangements with the company yourself, as we are unable to contact them on your behalf. It is also your job to make sure your country allows shipment of these supplements.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but we thank you for your understanding! We would love to have you experience the benefits that Essentially Whole products can provide.

Please let us know if we can help with anything else, and thanks for being in our community!
