Benefits of Using an Infrared Sauna

I know your health is important to you, but exercise takes so much effort, and diet can get so complicated. Even as a women’s hormone practitioner, I struggle to achieve balance.

We all have those days when we worked late to meet a deadline, there was a family emergency, and you opened the door to a mountain of laundry waiting at home.

Sometimes driving to the gym after work can feel like too much.

For that reason, I’m always on the lookout for products and services that will fit easily into your busy schedule and contribute to your good health.

You might be too exhausted to put effort into exercise, but would you have enough energy for a simple sauna session that will allow you to gather your thoughts, have a moment for yourself, and support your body at the same time?

An infrared sauna session is a perfect solution. And it’s also easy and fun to incorporate as part of your regular daily routine.

I can’t believe how much of a difference using a sauna has made! I love technology, but it can be draining: notifications are constantly going off, alarms sound each section of a busy schedule, unwanted spam calls come in, and it’s just so much noise! I can feel the tension building up in my body with every alert.

When I feel all of that tension, I know I need to be proactive to prevent it from turning into a headache or something worse. So I head to my little oasis. A sauna is a perfect retreat from the chaos of the world. It only takes a short time to soak up the peaceful silence and bask in the gentle heat before I can feel my body relax.

Using an infrared sauna is one of my favorite self-care methods, and here are some of the top benefits:

Top Benefits of Using the Infrared Sauna

#1 – Detoxing and Lymphatic Drainage

As you go about your daily life, you expose your skin to a lot of rough stuff. Chemicals and metals are in everything from the products you use in the shower to the make-up you put on your face. Some of these chemicals and metals are toxic, hormone-disrupting, and linked to multiple health concerns.

You’ve probably seen phthalates and parabens listed in the ingredients of cosmetic products before. You should proceed with caution when using products with these ingredients. Certain types of these chemicals can disrupt hormones and harm your reproductive system.

If you’re familiar with the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG’s) dirty dozen food list, you might also be interested in reviewing their toxic twelve lists of chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics. This can help you decide what to avoid so you can make the best choices for yourself and your family.

Your body works hard to remove these toxins, but sometimes you’ll need a little extra support. Spending time in an infrared sauna gently assists with detoxing by heating your body and causing you to sweat. Combining a sauna session with a lymphatic massage is a great way to release toxins through lymphatic drainage.

If you want to dial up the detox, try dry brushing before your sauna session. Dr. Shilpi Khetarpal, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic, states, “Dry brushing unclogs pores in the exfoliation process. It also helps detoxify your skin by increasing blood circulation and promoting lymph flow/drainage.” (1)

#2 – Improves Immune System Function

Health and wellness are probably at the top of your minds these days. You know supporting your immune system is the best way to stay well. But how can you improve your immune system function?

There are a lot of simple ways to do that, including drinking enough water, reducing stress, meditating, and so on. Adding an infrared sauna habit is another simple way to improve immune system function. By making it a part of your morning or evening routine, you ensure your body is ready to fight off anything that gets in your way.

#3 – Decreases Depression and Stabilizes Moods

Depression is a common mental illness. Thankfully, medication is available to help and has saved many lives. However, even when it is treated effectively with medication, it can, unfortunately, cause some unwanted side effects.

Exercise is one of the most popular recommendations when searching for natural ways to stabilize moods, but it can be challenging for a depressed person to start exercising. However, a sauna session is an enjoyable option, and enjoyment is a powerful weapon for motivation. So it’s always exciting when there are new options available to help. Researchers are exploring how heat and infrared may treat depression.

#4 – Aids Heart Health and Supports Other Body Systems

Heart health is a big deal. Unfortunately, you can put these crucial muscles at risk with your stressful, busy lifestyle and unfortunate genetics. Fortunately, there are still accessible, simple things you can do to keep your heart healthy.

An infrared sauna session increases heart rate, circulation, and blood flow. It also temporarily lowers blood pressure. There is some evidence to support it as an effective treatment for congestive heart failure. (2)

When you use a Sunlighten sauna, you’ll know you’re taking good care of your heart. Dr. Joel Kahn stated, “Sunlight saunas are the only infrared saunas clinically shown to temporarily lower blood pressure and reduce belly fat, both contributing factors to a healthy heart.” (3)

#5 – Promotes Healthy Aging

Women typically do everything they can to turn back the clock. The anti-aging market continually profits off of their desire to be forever young. Despite what this market segment wants you to think, you can embrace it and age gracefully.

Many factors contribute to the aging process including diet, toxins, and some of the hormone-disrupting chemicals found in cosmetics. So when you are searching for the perfect anti-aging potion remember to check the ingredients.

And for the toxins, you can’t avoid, use the infrared sauna to detox and age naturally.

Other markers of healthy aging are the ability of your immune system to function optimally and the quality of sleep you get at night. The infrared sauna helps to improve both of these functions, thereby contributing to healthy aging.

#6 – Improves Sleep Quality

When your natural circadian rhythms are off, your sleep cycle is affected. Unsurprisingly, it is your hormones that strongly influence your awake and sleep times. Light regulates these hormones, but it isn’t just light that influences your rest. Body temperature is another factor in how well you sleep.

By using an infrared sauna, the body temperature rises and then lowers. This lower body temperature signals to your body that it’s time to rest. It’s an excellent reason for an evening sauna session.

Body temperature won’t be your only sign to rest. A few quiet moments to yourself in a peaceful sauna session can provide the zen-like relaxation you need to transition into a calm sleep state.

Bonus Sauna Tips!

Now that you know how beneficial infrared sauna sessions can be, you can get those benefits by starting regular infrared sauna sessions. You’ll want to ensure your body receives the maximum benefit from the sessions, so duration and consistency are essential.

If you are new to infrared saunas, you can begin with a 10-minute session and slowly work up to 30-minute sessions. To get the most benefits out of sauna use, it’s generally recommended to have 3-4 sessions each week. However, if you want to use it more often, Infrared saunas are safe to use daily. (4)

Diffusing essential oils can be a fantastic way to enhance your sauna session. Try peppermint or eucalyptus. The scent will invigorate you and open your mind, making it the perfect time for a quick meditation. You can also check out The Essential Oils Hormone Solution or Smart Mom’s Guide to Essential Oils to learn more about how to use essential oils properly.

For many of you, your wellness needs change frequently. Using essential oils in the sauna can support your body with whatever you need each day. If you need to relax, you might try lavender. If you’re feeling down and want to shift your mood, you could use one of the citrus oils in a diffuser. For those times when your brain feels scattered and you want to be more grounded and focused, sandalwood or vetiver may be what can help.

Now that you know how often to use the sauna and how to create the perfect sauna session, you are going to be sweating a lot. You don’t want to get dehydrated so my final tip is to drink plenty of water. An infrared sauna session will make you sweat, so make sure you hydrate before and after.
