The Best Essential Oils for Loving Your Liver

Keeping your liver healthy is vital to supporting all of your body’s systems. A sluggish liver can slow down the natural filtration process that your body uses to keep harmful toxins from negatively affecting your body.

Essential oils can help your body to filter out those toxins and can aid in supporting your liver health. In addition, using them to create your own natural cleaning and personal care products will reduce your exposure to toxins in the home.  Essential oils can also be used in place of over-the-counter remedies that could be harming your liver from prolonged exposure.

Let’s take a look at the best essential oils for your liver and how to use them on a daily basis!

ROSEMARY

Harmful toxins are no match for Rosemary! This oil and has been used since the time of Hippocrates when it was prescribed to overcome liver disorders.  It supports bile production essential for metabolization of fat and natural detoxification in the body. Liver enzymes in the blood can also be reduced by using Rosemary essential oil.  Research has shown that daily use of Rosemary can protect against injury caused by chemicals (Ra Kovi et al., 2014).

GERANIUM

This floral gem helps to support the body’s natural kidney function, in addition to promoting detoxification processes.  It is able to aid in the dilation of biliary ducts in the liver detoxification process to get the liver back on track. And when the liver is back on track, your hormones can regulate, another process that Geranium aids.

HELICHRYSUM

Research shows that this powerful essential oil can help the body recover from inflammation and fight free radicals that invade. It is known for its healing powers, especially its ability to simulate the function of liver cells. It naturally supports blood health as well, acting as a chelating agent for metals, chemicals, and toxins in the body.

TURMERIC

Sesquiterpenes are the powerhouse in turmeric that have the ability to pass through the blood-brain barrier to support brain health. They can help to promote the health of overtaxed organs and stimulate the glands in order to enhance natural processes. Popular for centuries in ayurvedic medicine, it has recently come into popularity in Western culture as its medical use for inflammation has increased.

FRANKINCENSE

You have heard me wax poetic about frankincense before, but it does its magic for the liver as well.  Esters, sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, and monoterpenes make it a solution for all sorts of issues. Eliminating toxins from the body is greatly aided by monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, as they can also stimulate and soothe the liver.

CITRUS OILS

In addition to supporting your body’s natural detoxification processes, citrus essential oils make powerful additions to your liver arsenal since they are natural diuretics.

Try this amazing blend I’ve created after extensively researching liver support:

Love Your Liver Rollerball Blend

7 drops Helichrysum, or Lavender if you don’t have it
7 drops Frankincense essential oil
3 drops Geranium essential oil
3 drops Turmeric essential oil
2 drops Rosemary essential oil

Directions:
In a 10 mL glass rollerball bottle, add the essential oils and top off with fractionated coconut oil.  Apply over your abdomen every night for support.

Or try this recipe for self-care support from my best-selling book Smart Mom’s Guide to Essential Oils:

Detox Soak with Cleansing Bath Blend

1 cup of sea salt
1 cup Epsom salts
1 cup apple cider vinegar
2 drops Rosemary essential oil
5 drops Grapefruit essential oil
5 drops Frankincense essential oil

Directions:
Combine all of the dry ingredients in a bowl, and then combine all essential oils in a glass dish. Fill your bathtub with the hottest water you can stand. Add the dry ingredients and vinegar, swirl, and then add the essential oils into the tub and mix with your hand.  Soak in the detox bath for 20 minutes only – any longer and your body may reabsorb the toxins you have released. Rinse off the remaining salt on your body in the shower, and be sure to hydrate afterward.

Note: Rosemary, Lemon, and Frankincense have purifying and cleansing properties and great for your skin and digestive system.  Take a detox bath once a month to support a healthy metabolism.

And you never want to forget to hydrate that body!  Zing up your daily water intake by trying out this delicious citrus-infused water:

Liver Detox Water Infusion

½ ruby red grapefruit, juiced
2 Meyer lemons, 1 juiced and 1 sliced into wheels
1 drop Grapefruit essential oil
1 tea bag of Dandelion Tea

Directions:
Make an 8 oz. cup of Dandelion tea and let cool down. Add the juices of the ruby red grapefruit and Meyer lemons to a small bowl. Pour juice through a fine-mesh sieve into a 2-quart pitcher. Add sliced lemon, cover with water, and then add the Grapefruit essential oil Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, but preferably for 3 hours before serving.  Pour into your glass water bottle for on-the-go support, or create a smaller version in an infusion water bottle.

How do I tailor this recipe to add to my dog’s food or will just rubbing it on her help? My animal communicator tells me she’s having liver issues. I’m new to eo’s and don’t want to overdo it.

    • Dr. Mariza April 14, 2020 at 10:01 am #

Hi Patty. I recommend you to check with your vet first before doing anything as some animals are sensitive to it.
