Start Your Fall With This Pear & Ginger Compote

It’s the time of year to start bringing out the blankets, snuggling up, and eating something warm and delicious. But just because it’s pie season, that doesn’t mean you have to over-do it with sugar and calories. This compote slow-cooks its own sugars from the pears to create a yummy, sticky sweet treat. Use it as pie filling, jam, or eat it on its own!

Pear & Ginger Compote

Serves 4

  • 2 pounds very ripe Bosc or Bartlett pears, peeled and cut into 1⁄2-inch pieces
  • 1⁄2 inch fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1⁄2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Add all the ingredients to your slow cooker, and mix well. Cover and cook on low for 3 1⁄2 to 4 hours, or until fruit pieces have broken down. If you prefer a less chunky compote, use a potato masher to mash the cooked pears.
