Lime Essential Oil Uses and Benefits

The zesty flavor of limes is not unfamiliar to most of us. From savory dishes to desserts to cocktails, limes have become indispensable in many cuisines. This citrus fruit packs more of a punch than just flavor, though. In Lime essential oil, we are able to harness its significant cleansing and health benefits to aid your body and refresh your mind!

BACKGROUND OF LIME ESSENTIAL OIL

This oil is cold-pressed from the peel of the fruit from the Citrus aurantifolia tree. This variety of lime, known commonly as the Key Lime, is sourced from Brazil and contains even more health benefits than the common limes we find in grocery stores. Like all citrus oils, Lime is high in limonene, which makes it a great cleanser and refresher to your body, mind, and home. However, Lime also offers unique benefits to your brain, nervous system, respiratory system, metabolism, gastrointestinal system, and cardiovascular health.

As with all citrus oils, be careful applying them topically before going out in the sun. They can make your skin particularly sensitive to UV rays, so avoid direct exposure for about 12 hours after application.

CLEANSING THE BODY

Lime essential oil is helpful in cleansing your body, both externally and internally. Try adding a drop to your soap or shampoo for some extra purifying power and an uplifting aroma.

I love the blend of Lime and Lavender in my personal care products to soothe, cleanse, and refresh my skin. Combining Lime with Melaleuca (Tea Tree) and massaging it into your scalp can also cleanse and refresh your hair.

Lime essential oil is a great one for internal detoxing and cleansing. It is high in antioxidants, which will help support your liver and a healthy immune system. The antioxidants will help reduce the inflammation in your system and keep your body functioning at its peak.

The best way to use Lime for liver and immune support is to take it internally. And I’ll tell you that it’s not a hard one to get down – its zesty, fresh, citrusy flavor makes a great addition to a glass of water, smoothie, or any other recipe!  I love adding a drop to homemade guacamole or salsa!

METABOLISM BOOST

Lime essential oil has been found to help you manage weight by supporting healthy metabolism and digestion. It can help with those pesky sugar cravings that keep you from your goals.

Putting a drop of Lime essential oil in a glass of water (along with Lemon if you want some extra zing) will give you a slightly sweet, citrusy flavor to help the craving pass. It also can help to keep a healthy blood sugar balance and keep your digestive system healthy by cutting through inflammation. A daily dose of Lime essential oil could really help you reach your wellness goals!

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

The citrus oils are my favorites when it comes to immediate emotional support. You just can’t beat the refreshing aroma of oils like Lime, Wild Orange, Lemon, Tangerine, Bergamot, and Grapefruit! The constituent limonene in all of these oils makes them uplifting, energizing, and mood-stabilizing.

Lime essential oil also has high levels of beta-pinene, which has been found to promote healthy brain chemical balance and reduce sad feelings. A great way to harness the power of Lime is to combine it with complementary oils in your diffuser. To help you focus, I love the combination of Lime, Basil, and Rosemary. For emotional support, combining Lime with Ylang Ylang and Grapefruit will create an aroma that is pure happiness.

If you feel like your energy is lagging, the combination of Lime, Spearmint, and Tangerine is sure to wake up your senses and get you going.

PURIFY SURFACES AND AIR

Limonene is a powerful surface cleaner and air purifier that can help kill lingering bacteria. The refreshing, zesty smell of Lime essential oil makes it a great one to add to your homemade cleaning products. Lime is also a powerful agent to help cut through grime, grease, and sticky residue. Putting a drop or two on a cotton round will help lift those sticky messes that seem impossible.

To purify the air in your home, combine a couple of drops each of Lime, Basil, Grapefruit, and Lemon for a refreshing smell that will also cleanse the air of bacterial threats.

LIME ESSENTIAL OIL IN THE KITCHEN

I can’t get enough of the flavor of Lime essential oil. Its potent, citrusy flavor makes a great addition to your water infusions or smoothies. In the summer, it is refreshing to add to any of your beverages, especially icy smoothies, dacquiris, or mixed drinks. You can also use it in place of lime juice in your recipes for a concentrated flavor that packs a punch for your health. Check out some inspiration here!
