DIY SPECTACULAR

Believe it or not, making some really practical and oily gifts for your friends and family this holiday season can be done in minimal time with very few ingredients.  Whether you do it all yourself or involve your kiddos in the process, holiday DIY produces thoughtful and practical gifts that your friends and family will use all year long.  See for yourself, and be sure to let me know what you tried!

Aromatherapy Jewelry

Looking for a gift that suits nearly every age group?  Try aromatherapy jewelry.  Whether you opt for ordering simple leather bracelets online or you go all in and make your own clay bead jewelry, this is truly the gift that keeps on giving.  It provides fashion and function all in one, and can be customized for the recipient.

Leather bracelets are the easiest way to share oils with those you love, as you can simply put a few drops of oil on the leather and it will provide an amazing aroma all day long.  This makes a great surprise for kiddos who may not want to apply oils topically, especially those that may need an extra dose of focus throughout the day at school.  Peppermint and Wild Orange make a great focus combo or go for the InTune Focus Blend for some premium oil action.  Simply give the gift with a sample vial of oil.

Clay Pendants or Beads can be easily made with terra cotta clay and strung on whatever kind of necklace or bracelet you choose or made into a keychain for someone who drives a lot.  Most people opt for the necklace pendant jewelry that can be stamped with a cool design or shaped into a meaningful figure for your friends and family.  And just like the other gifts, all you do is add a bit of essential oils to the clay and it soaks it up, giving you an aromatherapy kick to take with you all day long.  I recommend gifting a sample of Serenity Calming Blend or Balance Grounding Blend, Motivate Encouraging Blend, or Elevation Joyful Blend with these unique gifts. aromatherapy-jewelry

Ornaments

Nothing says Christmas like an ornament specially-crafted for someone you love…or someone on your list who is hard to buy for!  The ornaments can be seasonally shaped or more generic so that they can double as an air freshener throughout the year.  You can even dub them “car fresheners” and instruct the recipients to hand them from their rearview mirrors.  These are super versatile and easy to make.  The terra cotta clay mentioned above can be utilized here as well with a simple roll-and-cut cookie cutter method.  Stamp them with a funky stamp or add in a design of your own.  You can even find cool textures and patterns to press it into around your home.

If you want to involve your littles in this project, I recommend going for the Salt Dough Ornaments.  They will love making cookie-like gifts without you having to worry about their constant licking of fingers from irresistible cookie dough, icing, and trimmings.  You can stamp them, paint them, or put fingerprints in them for unique designs.  And don’t forget to add the oils!  Opt for some Christmasy or Holiday scents like the seasonal Holiday Joy or just add a bit of Clove, Cinnamon Bark, and Wild Orange for a warm seasonal scent. Try the recipe below for a fun non-toxic craft time that produces memorable gifts for those in your children’s lives.

SALT DOUGH ORNAMENTS

Ingredients:
4 c. all-purpose four
1 c. salt
1 ½ c. warm water

Tools:
Drinking straw or toothpick (for making holes)
Cookie cutters
Stamps or paints (optional)
dōTERRA Essential Oils

1) Preheat your oven to 325° F.
2) In a bowl, mix the flour and salt together until blended.  Gradually add in the warm water, stirring as you go with a wooden spoon or silicon spatula.  For the best result, squish with your hands and then knead until workable.
3) On a floured surface, roll out the dough to at least 1/8 in. thick and cut with cookie cutters.  Stamp in designs before baking (or after baking with ink/paint).
4) Use a drinking straw or toothpick to make a hole for string.
5) Bake on cookie sheets for appx. 1 hour or until hard.
6) Remove from oven and let cool.
7) Add one drop of essential oil to each ornament and let it soak in.  (If painting, wait until after the paint has dried.)

Eye Makeup Remover

If you have raw organic Coconut Oil and a few drops of Lavender, Frankincense, or Serenity® Calming Blend, you have yourself the best eye make-up remover ever!  Forget those over-the-counter chemical-laden removers or wipes.  All you need is all natural ingredients that will calm and support healthy skin while easily removing the mascara!  Spoon ¼ c. to ½ c. coconut oil in a glass jar and swirl it around in a hot water bath.  Once it has melted, let it cool slightly and add in 5 drops of essential oil.  Pour it into your glass gifting container (I recommend a flip-top glass mini-container from a craft store) and pop in the refrigerator to harden.  So simple, so classy, and you will never hear the end of how well it works!

Bath Salt Ornaments

Looking for the easiest DIY gift ever?  Epsom salt ornaments not only are practical and easy-to-use, but they use up the essential oil clinging to the insides of your seemingly empty bottles.  Simply pour 1 cup of Epsom salt per plastic ornament into a bowl and throw in some empty bottles, allowing the salt to get inside of them.  Let it sit for an hour or so, and voila!  If you don’t have empty bottles yet, just add 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil.  Lavender or Serenity® Calming Blend are my favorites for this project.  You can also add dried herbs or flower petals for a bit of flair and even some natural color if you choose.  Pour into the ornaments, pop on the lid, and add a holiday bow for gifting!

Water Bead Diffuser

For a really unique way to diffuse oils in a smaller environment, try water beads!  Easily ordered online in a variety of colors, they come as hard balls that need to be “watered.”  Reminiscent of the “grow-it” slimy creatures from your youth, the beads expand as they soak up the water.  You can mix and match colors for sports teams or school pride or simply make it monotone for elegance (or look for the pearlescent beads for added glam).  Once they have “grown,” place in your choice of glass jar or vase and add your favorite essential oil or blend; then, every few days, add some more water to refresh.  Coupled with a sample-size of oil, this makes a great gift for coworkers in cubicles or offices or as a chic addition to home décor.

Aromatherapy Dough

A simple gift for the littles in your life or a simple favor at a holiday party, Aromatherapy Dough will keep parents happy and kids calm!  It is easy to make and you can customize the essential oils, color, and design.  I like to throw in a handful of glitter for some super special magic.  You can even use red and green glitter for a holiday theme!  And you know that Lavender is the top choice for this dough, right?? <wink>

Aromatherapy Dough for Kids

2 c. all-purpose flour
2 c. water (add coloring if desired)
1 c. salt
1 T. olive oil
1 T. cream of tartar
5 drops Lavender essential oil

1) In a large saucepan, combine all ingredients except for essential oils and stir well.
2) Put over medium heat on the stovetop and stir-stir-stir until it all of a sudden forms a ball.  Immediately remove from heat and dump onto parchment paper to cool.
3)  Add the essential oil (and glitter!) and knead well.
4)  Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.  Should last for a few months.
