DIM Q&A: How to Address Estrogen Dominance Symptoms with DIM

I remember being in my 30s and feeling exhausted just trying to get through the day. I was dealing with migraines, weight gain, painful periods, and insomnia.

I felt terrible and finally, I reached a breaking point. I had my hormones tested and did some research. I found out that what the doctors referred to as normal aging was actually estrogen dominance, a common hormone dysfunction.

This experience led me to dive into research about what supplements may be helpful on my healing journey. One of the biggest players I discovered is Diindolylmethane (DIM). Along with other practices and supplements, it can be a huge help to enable your body to get back into balance!

DIM can provide excellent relief, but it’s nearly impossible to find a quality supplement. So I took matters into my own hands and created a triple-tested, proven-effective formula of DIM in the Essentially Whole® store. Get it here today >>

I know so many women out there are feeling like I did, suffering and desperate for a solution. Let’s dive into some of the top questions I get about DIM and how you can know if it’s the right choice for your body…

I want to put your mind at ease that you are making the best choices for your body, so I’m sharing answers to some of the most asked questions I get about DIM based on my own medical knowledge and experience.

Because I don’t know your unique situation, I want to remind you that you should always discuss any supplement changes or additions with your doctor first.

What Is DIM?

Balancing the hormones in your body is key to feeling great and decreasing your risk for serious diseases, including cancer.

With estrogen dominance being such a common issue for women, finding a way to rid your body of excess estrogen is especially essential.

You want to encourage it to leave via the safest, least cancerous route. This is the 2-OH pathway. The 16-OH pathway causes things to grow and leads to estrogen dominance and the 4-OH pathway increases your risk of cancers making it the most dangerous pathway.

There are three different paths for estrogen to take through the liver to leave the body. The 2-OH, 4-OH, and 16-OH pathways.

DIM encourages any old or excess estrogen to leave via the safest route, the 2-OH pathway.

Why Is DIM Helpful for Your Hormones?

DIM is an important supplement that can reduce symptoms related to estrogen dominance. Having estrogen dominance can contribute to problems, such as cancer, PMS, inflammation, acne, hot flashes, headaches, anxiety, and more.

DIM reduces estrogen dominance by supporting the maintenance of healthy estrogen levels in your body. DIM not only supports your body in maintaining healthy levels, it also decreases your risk for other diseases. It does this by encouraging the removal of old and excess estrogen from your liver through the safe 2-OH pathway.

Whether you’ve had hormone tests that indicate estrogen dominance or just suspect it based on your symptoms, DIM is typically a safe and easy route to address your hormone concerns naturally. Here are some of the top questions I get about DIM supplements:

When Should I Take DIM? With Food or Without?

One of the first questions people ask when starting a new supplement is when do I take it? The answer for DIM is: with a meal.

Specifically, the ideal time to take DIM is in the morning with breakfast. However, we are all different, and you should take it with the meal that will work best for you and your lifestyle.

Can I Get Enough DIM through food?

Probably not. It’s a complicated conversion process.

The first step of the process is to consume cruciferous veggies (for example, some broccoli or kale), but you need to eat a ton of it. Even if you’re a veggie fanatic and broccoli is your side dish with every meal, you’re still probably not going to consume enough of it. And that’s only the first step.

After that, some secondary steps need to take place in your body to convert the vegetables into compounds your body can use. Eventually, this compound becomes DIM. But there are often some obstacles in the way.

Unfortunately, any hormone imbalance, gut dysfunction or inflammation can interfere with these steps. So depending on the condition of your body, it may not be able to complete this conversion process successfully.

But I have good news. My DIM Complete supplement contains the easiest-to-absorb form of DIM. So even if you are experiencing inflammation, gut problems, or hormone imbalances, your body will still be able to use the supplement immediately.

Should I Take DIM if I Take Other Hormones (Progesterone, Estrogen/Estradiol or Testosterone)?

Because I don’t know your unique situation or medical history, you should check with your healthcare practitioner first before adding a supplement. They know your specific situation in-depth and can offer customized guidance.

But in general, let’s discuss each hormone individually.

  • Progesterone: If you’re taking progesterone, you may have estrogen dominance. If so, DIM is one of the top supplements I recommend, and it’s OK to take DIM with progesterone.
  • Testosterone: In some individuals, taking DIM can reduce androgens (including testosterone), so make sure to check with your doctor first.
  • Estrogen: Taking DIM with estrogen is more of a risk because DIM can reduce estrogen, disrupting the hormone balance. You’ll need to discuss it with your healthcare practitioner. Together you can decide if the benefits outweigh the risks.

Can DIM Give Me Headaches?

There is nothing worse than a migraine that interrupts your fun plans for the day. Lounging in a dark, silent room is not my idea of a good time. So, it’s unfortunate that one of DIM’s uncommon but possible side effects is a headache.

Instead of completely refusing to try DIM because of a possible side effect, try to think of the headache as a message.

These headaches are a signal from your body that your digestion and liver need more support. Combining my Liver Support Blend with DIM can give your liver the support it needs so you can take it without getting those pesky headaches. You can also begin the supplements more slowly to avoid any potential issues as your body adjusts to having extra help!

Should I Take DIM if I Have Low Progesterone or Estrogen Dominance?

A slow liver is one of the biggest causes of estrogen dominance. DIM helps to combat this by assisting your liver with removing excessive estrogen.

Generally, the answer is yes, you should. However, make sure you talk to your trusted healthcare provider with any questions about your specific case.

Should I Take DIM if I Have Low Estrogen?

If your estrogen is low, taking DIM is probably not the best fit for you. My Hormone Balance Supplement might be a better option for your body.

If you are unsure about your estrogen levels, you should get tested. For more information about testing your hormone levels, listen to my Essentially You podcast on this topic.

Should I Take DIM if I May Have Liver or Kidney Complications?

Liver and kidney complications can have far-reaching effects on your entire body.

DIM can be good support for kidney and liver health because it assists with removing excess estrogen in the safest, most efficient way.

Bring it up at your next appointment with your practitioner to discuss your situation and see if it is right for you.

Can I Take DIM if I Am on Fulvestrant Shots?

It depends on your situation. I have more detailed information about how to use DIM supplements for hormone balance in this article. Start with reading this post and then start a discussion with your doctor about it.

Only you and your doctor providing the fulvestrant shots can decide if DIM is suitable for you.

Can Men Take This Supplement?

I do not recommend this supplement for men.
