Back to School Essential Oil Recipes

There is nothing quite like hungry kiddos when they bound off of the bus or fly through your door at the end of the day. Or those homeschool hunger pangs during that witching hour between lunch and dinner. And, of course, you don’t ever want to neglect to start their day without a powerful breakfast to get their mind and body prepared for the rigors of academics. Here are some of my favorite recipes that not only use natural ingredients but also provide a great energy-boost of nutritional wellness for your kids no matter what time of day they are served. Oh! And you know that they all use dōTERRA Essential Oils for an extra flavor component, not to mention the awesome health supplement that they provide. (Note: The dōTERRA Essential Oils mentioned below are all safe for consumption, but be sure to discuss their use with a trusted healthcare professional beforehand to ensure that they are right for your family.) Breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a snack – these recipes are all completely adaptable and great for an anytime boost.

Remember that essential oils are 50-70% more potent than their herbal counterparts, so a little goes a long way when using them in cooking or baking. Personal taste also comes into play, so feel free to experiment with the quantity of the essential oils suggested below or to change some of the ingredients in the recipes to suit your family’s preferences. Even more fun is making these recipes together with your kids!

HONEY LIME DIP

Looking for a quick dip that goes with just about anything? And even better…one that your kids can make themselves? Try out this sweet and tangy, super nutritious Honey Lime Dip featuring dōTERRA’s Lime Essential Oil.

1 c. Greek Yogurt
2 Tbsp. Raw Organic Honey
2 drops Lime Essential Oil

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and use with pretzels, fruit, or animal crackers!

CITRUS ICE

One of my mom friends whips this gem up to avoid giving her kids those sugary frozen pops in the summer, and it is also a favorite when the kiddos are under the weather. So easy to make and super delicious! You can also add in chunks of fruit for an added burst of flavor!

2 cups Ice Cubes
2 drops Lime, Lemon, or Wild Orange Essential Oil

Pour ice into an extreme blender with the essential oils and pulse until the ice is broken into smaller pieces. Blend until snow forms (usually 1-2 minutes). Scoop out and enjoy! (Be sure to clean out your blender asap if it is plastic!)

REFRESHING BERRY SMOOTHIE

A standard smoothie recipe with some dōTERRA flair, this powerful smoothie packs tons of antioxidant punch for your family. The recipe makes one adult serving, so feel free to double or decrease as need be. Soooo yummy!

½ cup Organic Vanilla Yogurt
½ cup Almond or Coconut Milk
Handful of Blueberries
2-4 Strawberries
Handful of Raspberries
2 drops Lemon or Wild Orange Essential Oil

Combine ingredients in your blender. Blend and pour into a glass to enjoy. (Be sure to clean your blender asap if it is plastic!)

MINT CHOCOLATE CANDY

Yep. You read that right. How about a sugarless candy that rivals the store-bought dark chocolate? This recipe is super easy and makes a ton of treats. I even like to chop these up and use them in a yogurt treat at the end of the day!

1 c. Cacao Powder (like Hershey’s)
1½ c. Organic Coconut Oil
1-2 tsp. Stevia (to taste)
1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
1 drop Peppermint Essential Oil
Silicon molds

Melt the coconut oil over the stove in a small sauce pan on low heat. Remove from heat and stir in cacao powder until well-mixed; be sure to stir gently since the powder is super-fine. Add in vanilla and stevia and stir to mix well. Add one drop of Peppermint oil and stir again. Pour into silicon molds of any shape resting on a tray or plate. Put into the freezer immediately for at least 1 hour. Pop out and enjoy, but they will melt at room temperature. You can also omit the essential oil for just plain chocolate, or add 1 cup of nut butter for even more excitement! These are for the dark chocolate lovers in your household!

POWER BALLS

These amazing little balls of flavor have so many awesome nutrients for your family. I pop one after a workout and my friend’s kids beg for one after a long day at school. I have even seen them munching on them on the way to the bus stop. They are that good! And this is totally customizable. Use the date and oat base, and mix and match your ingredients.

No time for balls? Line a 9×9 baking pan with plastic wrap and push the mixture down inside being sure to make it even (the bottom of a glass is great for this). Cover with plastic wrap and put in the fridge just like you would the normal recipe. Then pop out, slice up into your preferred shape, and you can even individually wrap these and keep them in the fridge for a grab-n-go snack!

1 packed cup Dates, pitted and moist
1½ c. Oats
½ c. Dried Cranberries
3 Tbsp. Flax Seeds
¼ c. Sunflower Seeds
2-4 drops Wild Orange Essential Oil
1 c. Nut Butter
½ c. Raw Organic Honey
½ c. Organic Coconut Oil

Place the dates in a blender and pulse until it forms a soft dough. Remove from blender and place in a mixing bowl. Add the oats, cranberries, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, nut butter, honey, and coconut oil. (You can melt the nut butter, honey, and coconut oil together over low heat on the stove, but it takes a bit longer.)

Smush together with a spoon and then give up and use your hands…or have your kids mix it with their hands! Squeeze and roll into balls and place on wax paper. Refrigerate for 1 hour to set and then store in an air-tight container.

Note: This recipe is completely customizable. Sub in other ingredients or seed and take out what you don’t like. Try using Lime, Lemon, or even Lavender oil in the mix!

I can’t wait to see how you use these treats with your family! Please let me know how I can help you on your essential oil journey. I would love to have you join my Terra Tribe, but let’s talk first about getting the oils into your home!
