7 Best Essential Oils for Thyroid Health

You know I love using oils in my daily self-care routine to bridge the gap and give my body the boost it needs. If you are dealing with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, whether from thyroid issues or an autoimmune disease, the extra symptoms that come with it cause all sorts of discomfort.

Helping your body regulate its hormones and reestablish a balance can’t be done with a daily dose of medicine. Getting to the root of the problem with nutrition, self-care, stress management, and detox will help you reclaim your hidden self!

I know I really struggled before my Hashimoto’s diagnosis, but my go-to essential oils helped me to gain back my life!  Here are some of my favorites for promoting thyroid health and helping ease some of those most common symptoms!

FRANKINCENSE

Frankincense is known as the “King of Oils,” and for good reason!  The positive effects this oil brings the body are amazing! I love how its aroma can simultaneously ground, calm, and refresh me.

As for your thyroid, Frankincense can promote healthy immune and endocrine responses and decrease inflammation. This is vital if you have thyroid dysfunction or an autoimmune thyroid disease like Hashimoto’s. Supporting your health at a cellular level, Frankincense boosts immune function to help bridge the gap from hormones to the thyroid and get your body back at its best.

In addition, Frankincense also rejuvenates your skin when applied topically. Skin irritations and dull, dry complexions that come with thyroid issues are little matches for the wonder of Frankincense.  Simply add a drop to your daily moisturizer — or even straight onto your skin — to achieve a healthy glow. CLOVE

Feeling overwhelmed with all you have to deal with in life? So much of your body’s thyroid function stems from stress management, namely the hormone cortisol.   When you feel overly taxed or are treading in the chronic stress waters, your thyroid can really take a hit. Clove essential oil helps regulate your body’s stress response. You can feel an immediate calm because of its warming scent, which always reminds me of cozy fall days. It not only smells great, but it is a powerful antioxidant, even more powerful than blueberries!

The main constituent of Clove oil, eugenol, can really help your body fend off environmental toxins and detox through free radicals, as well as giving that immune system a healthy boost.  Plus, it makes a great addition to many recipes.  Check out some great ideas that use clove oil here!

LEMONGRASS

Since your thyroid depends on certain nutrients to function at its best, your digestive system needs to be in top condition! Lemongrass essential oil has been found to promote healthy digestion and help your body absorb the nutrients when you eat.

If you’re dealing with inflammation, Lemongrass can also help regulate your body’s inflammatory responses and assist the cells that are associated with rebuilding damaged tissue. This is crucial if you are dealing with Hashimoto’s or hypothyroidism, because your thyroid gland could be in need of some repair. These facts, along with its ability to promote healthy circulation and nervous system responses, make Lemongrass a super powerful oil to help your thyroid function.

And a hint – you can also use Lemongrass essential oil to jazz up your water or your daily green smoothies. Its lemony goodness zings any recipe…and it even takes your herbal tea up a notch!

MYRRH

Myrrh essential oil not only benefits your skin but also supports healthy emotions and boosts the immune system.  It also has strong cleansing properties that can act as antioxidants in your body and help your body filter out the toxins that could be slowing you down. Your body synthesizes chemicals called cytokines, which play a major role in the progression of autoimmune thyroid diseases. A great benefit of myrrh is that it can keep your cells from producing this chemical, potentially thwarting your body’s attack on your thyroid gland.  Anything that can help you feel better faster is worth adding to your daily self-care routine!

You can apply directly to the thyroid or add it to a glass rollerball bottle for easy application. Even better, use it as a part of the Thyroid Support Rollerball recipe at the bottom of the blog.

LAVENDER

Get out of your stress mess with the power of Lavender essential oil.  I never leave home without it! It is not only great for nixing nasty skin issues, but it also has amazing aromatherapeutic powers that instantly calm your body and mind. Linalool, Lavender’s main constituent, also supports healthy immune responses and has been associated with improved cognitive health and abilities.

Brain fog and fatigue plagued me at the beginning of my Hashimoto’s journey when my thyroid craved some extra support.  Lavender can be a great go-to oil for your stash! Here are some great ways to incorporate it into your daily self-care routines.

PEPPERMINT

Nothing wakes me up when I’m feeling a slump like a whiff of Peppermint essential oil! Energizing and refreshing to your mood and mental state, Peppermint not only fights that overwhelming fatigue but also supports healthy digestion. Peppermint is a powerful oil that affects your central nervous system and your cells’ abilities to be stimulated, which could help rev up your underactive thyroid if you are dealing with hypothyroidism.

Those of you dealing with hyperthyroidism may be feeling hot flashy all the time, but Peppermint can provide an instant cooling sensation when applied topically. It is another one that can be soothing to your skin, as well!  Here are my favorite ways to use Peppermint!

MELALEUCA

With 92 compounds in the oil itself, Melaleuca (or Tea Tree) essential oil offers endless benefits to your health. It is able to promote your cell reproduction and tissue remodeling, which can really help restore your damaged thyroid gland. Remember how I said earlier that Myrrh can help to prevent the production of cytokines? So can Melaleuca, as well as keeping inflammation down due to its constituent terpinen-4-ol.

If you haven’t done some label-looking for toxins that may be lurking in your personal care and beauty products, it’s time to get on it.  Many of your thyroid issues could be stemming from your toxic load, so Melaleuca is a great oil to have on hand to support your body! Melaleuca supports healthy immune function and can also help to cleanse and protect your body from environmental threats. Here are some of my favorite ways to use it.

To take some of the guesswork out of getting started with these oils, here is my favorite thyroid support rollerball blend.

Essential Oils for Thyroid FAQ:

Which essential oil is best for hypothyroidism?
Essential oils are great for supporting a sluggish thyroid to help get your body back to balance. Some of my favorites include Frankincense, Clove, Lemongrass, Myrrh, Lavender, Peppermint, and Tea Tree.

How can I naturally balance my thyroid?/How do you support your thyroid naturally?
Before anything else, you need to get back to the root cause. What is leading to your thyroid problems in the first place? Is it stress, toxins, inflammatory foods, reproductive hormone (progesterone or estrogen) imbalance, an autoimmune disease like Hashimoto’s, etc.? Once you narrow the cause down, addressing that is going to be the key to healing your thyroid instead of just masking your symptoms. Essential oils are great tools to promote a healthy thyroid with any of these root causes, and using them in conjunction with supplements, nutrition, and lifestyle changes is the best way to naturally restore balance to your body.

How do you use essential oils for hypothyroidism?
Along with targeted supplements, nutrition, and lifestyle changes, essential oils are great supporters of your thyroid. Check out my Thyroid Support Rollerball blend — I use it daily, directly over my thyroid, for continued support.

Could you please tell if the presented blend is common for both types – Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroid? I would be very interested if there is a specific blend – the best mix – which is very recommended only for Hashimoto. Thank you so much!
